HC Deb 31 May 1938 vol 336 c1810
24. Mr. Mander

asked the Secretary of State for War what permission has been granted under paragraph 514a, King's Regulations, for the employment of aliens in the Aldershot Command and elsewhere, and the numbers so employed?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

This year 17 permissions have been given under the regulation in question, including eight in the Aldershot Command.

Mr. Mander

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that large numbers of German domestic servants are employed in officers' households in Aldershot and elsewhere; and am I to understand that this is being done to a large extent without permission?

Mr. Hore-Belisha.

I have answered the question, and given the information for which the hon. Member asked.

Mr. Mander

Yes; but is the right hon. Gentleman aware that very much larger numbers than those he gave are employed, and that often German is heard much more frequently than English in the Aldershot district. Will he not make inquiries?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

That is a question which should be addressed to the Home Secretary.

Mr. Thorne

Does the right hon. Gentleman think that these German servants could give any more information to Germany than she has now?
