HC Deb 23 May 1938 vol 336 c823
3. Mr. Day

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the latest information he has showing the number of trade unions there are in India registered under the Indian Trade Union Act?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

The number of trade unions (including Federations) borne on the Registers on 3oth September, 1937, was 378.

Mr. Day

How many members have these trade unions?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

As regards the strength of membership, the latest figure for 31st October, 1936, is, I understand, 268,000. But I would call the hon. Member's attention to the fact that the question of trade union membership is a matter for the Provinces.

Mr. Day

Can the hon. and gallant Member say whether complaints have been received of difficulties being put in the way of people joining the unions?
