HC Deb 23 May 1938 vol 336 c823
4. Mr. Day

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the number of cinematograph films that have been prohibited from exhibition in British India for the 12 months ended on the last convenient date?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

The information is not available in this country and, since the prohibition of cinematograph films is a matter within the discretion of the Provincial Governments in India, my Noble Friend does not feel justified in calling for a report from India. It will be appreciated that the position has now changed since the period for which my predecessor supplied the information in response to the hon. Member's inquiry.

Mr. Day

Has there been any alteration in the censorship?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

That is a matter for the Provincial legislature.
