HC Deb 23 May 1938 vol 336 c845
56. Mr. Remer

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the proposals for a Cotton Enabling Bill are estimated to require over 3,4300,000 a year for redundancy quotas, etc.; and whether he will make it clear to the promoters of these proposals that such a charge on the Exchequer is an impossibility and, as the export trade cannot bear this additional burden, the proposals will not be accepted by the Government as the basis for legislation?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade (Mr. Cross)

My right hon. Friend has not received any estimate of the cost of operating the various schemes for which provision is made in these proposals.
