HC Deb 12 May 1938 vol 335 cc1715-6
72. Sir W. Jenkins

asked the Minister of Health if he will give the method of the rating of school premises in England and Wales, each separately; the highest and lowest in elementary, senior, and secondary schools; and how private schools, which are grant earning, are rated in both areas?

Sir K. Wood

I have no jurisdiction in the determination of assessments for rates and no information as to the assessments placed upon schools. I am sending the hon. Member an extract from the recommendations of the Central Valuation Committee dealing with the assessment of public elementary and secondary schools. I understand that the methods adopted in Wales do not differ from those used in England. As regards the last part of the question, it will be appreciated that the circumstances of private schools vary widely. I understand that the method of assessment adopted is governed by the circumstances of the case.
