HC Deb 12 May 1938 vol 335 cc1716-7
79. Mr. Price

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that there has been an unequal rise in deposits of the principal joint stock banks in recent months, indicating attempts on the part of some to attract foreign balances; and whether, in view of the tendency to instability to which this gives rise, he will consider what action he can take in the matter?

Sir J. Simon

Divergencies between the experience of individual banks may be due to a large number of factors, quite apart from the question of foreign balances. The movement of deposits in the last six months has been slightly downwards on the whole. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.
