HC Deb 12 May 1938 vol 335 c1688
20. Mr. Lawson

asked the Minister of Labour what steps are being taken to find employment for those now on the register; and whether he has any proposals to make in the near future?

Mr. E. Brown

As the hon. Member is aware, the Employment Exchange System exists for the express purpose of bringing together employers who are in need of workpeople and workpeople who want work. Steps are constantly taken by publicity campaigns and in other ways to draw the attention of employers and work-people to the facilities offered by the Employment Exchanges, and it is my int0ntion to continue and develop this policy. In the year 1937 the number of vacancies filled by the Exchanges was 2,624,978.

Mr. Lawson

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Prime Minister told the House several months ago that a committee was considering this matter, and has he not got any proposals arising out of its deliberations?

Mr. Brown

I expect that we shall find an opportunity in a day or two to debate that point.

Mr. Lawson

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Minister of health has already given us some indications?
