HC Deb 04 May 1938 vol 335 cc871-2
54. Mr. Louis Smith

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence whether it has now been definitely decided to establish a calcium carbide factory in Norway instead of in Scotland or in Wales; and whether he has had any communication on the subject with the company which sponsored the Scottish scheme?

Sir T. Inskip

If my hon. Friend has in mind a factory to be set up, or on behalf of, the Government in Norway, I am not aware of any such proposal.

Mr. Smith

Is my right hon. Friend aware that a strong feeling exists in England as well as in Scotland that calcium carbide should be manufactured at home, and will he use his best endeavours with that end in view?

Sir T. Inskip

I used my best endeavours on a recent occasion.
