HC Deb 24 March 1938 vol 333 c1362
28. Mr. A. V. Alexander

asked the Home Secretary whether he is now in a position to make a statement on the policy of the Government arising from the granting of the appeal of the Eldorado Ice Cream Company, Limited, against decisions of the justices at Marlborough and Scunthorpe under the Shops (Sunday Trading Restriction) Act?

Sir S. Hoare

No, Sir. The matter is still under consideration, and I am not yet in a position to make a statement.

Mr. Alexander

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this question was first put many weeks ago, and that there is great danger of the position deteriorating, both for the good employers and the trade unions?

Sir S. Hoare

I am aware of the difficulties of the position. Unfortunately, the legal complexities which arise from decisions of the Courts are so great that my advisers must have further time to consider the matter.

Mr. Alexander

Can we have some assurance that the Government will receive a deputation?

Sir S. Hoare

No, Sir. I must first have the opinion of my advisers themselves.
