HC Deb 24 March 1938 vol 333 cc1362-3
29. Major-General Sir Alfred Knox

asked the Home Secretary how many appointments were made to the Metropolitan Police in 1937, and how many of these were ex-soldiers?

Sir S. Hoare

1,140 appointments were made to the Metropolitan Police Force in 1937. Eighty-eight of these were ex-soldiers.

Sir A. Knox

Would my right hon. Friend look into this matter with a view, possibly, to increasing the number of appointments given to ex-soldiers? Eighty-eight is a very small number.

Sir S. Hoare

I will certainly look into it, but my hon. and gallant Friend must remember that questions of age enter into this.

Sir A. Knox

Surely, the age at present is 26, is it not?
