HC Deb 23 March 1938 vol 333 cc1186-7
15. Mr. R. Robinson

asked the Prime Minister what progress has been made in the negotiations with the United States Government with regard to the islands of Canton and Enderbury in the Southern Pacific Ocean?

The Prime Minister

Conjointly with the United States Government, His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, in consultation with the Dominion Governments concerned, are examing proposals for the settlement of this question in the friendliest spirit. I hope very shortly to be able to make a public announcement on the subject.

Mr. Robinson

Will the Prime Minister consider, in the negotiations with the American Government, whether it would not be wise to give American aviation landing rights in these islands in return for landing rights for British aviation in the Hawaiian Islands?

The Prime Minister

Perhaps my hon. Friend will await the statement that I propose to make.

Mr. Jagger

Would the Prime Minister consider setting up another Non-Intervention Committee on this matter?
