HC Deb 23 March 1938 vol 333 cc1209-10
70. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Home Secretary whether he will take action to secure that all private underground airraid shelters shall be placed at the disposal of local authorities in the eventuality of war?

Mr. Lloyd

Local authorities are being asked to survey accommodation which could be made available to the public by arrangement with the owners or occupiers of the premises.

Mr. Sorensen

Does that imply that in the case of war these private shelters will be available for the general population?

Mr. Lloyd

I think we should wait until we see the results of the surveys made by local authorities.

Mr. Sorensen

Can the Under-Secretary indicate that some answer will be given to this very important point?

Mr. Lloyd

That is the answer.

Mr. Mander

To which shelter is the Cabinet going?

72. Mr. R. C. Morrison

asked the Home Secretary whether any definite understanding has yet been reached with the Metropolitan Water Board with regard to the protection against air raids of the water supply of their area?

Mr. Lloyd

My right hon. Friend has invited the Chairman of the Board to discuss this matter with him at the earliest convenient opportunity.
