HC Deb 21 March 1938 vol 333 cc832-3
38. Mr. C. S. Taylor

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will review the case of Miss Irene G. Smith, of Eastbourne, who, though gaining twenty-sixth place in the female telegraphist examinations in April of last year, has been advised by the Central Telegraph Commissioners that she is not eligible for employment as her home is in Eastbourne, although she is willing to reside in London?

Major Tryon

This examination is open only to local candidates and, under the regulations, Miss Smith, whose family home is in Eastbourne, could not be regarded as eligible for an appointment in London. I understand, however, that she has since been called up for an appointment at Eastbourne as the result of the position she took in another examination held for appointment in that town.
