HC Deb 17 March 1938 vol 333 cc581-2
41. Mr. Thorne

asked the Home Secretary whether he can give any information in connection with the electric-lift accident at the Victoria Tower on Monday night; how many men were injured; and what was the cause of the accident?

Sir S. Hoare

The cause of this accident was, I am advised, that 14 men were riding in the lift whereas, according to instructions and a prominent notice, only four should have done so. They were descending for the purpose of leaving work, and owing to the excessive weight the cage descended too fast and struck the ground with some force. I am informed that the men were taken to hospital but only three detained and that seven are now back at work.
