HC Deb 15 March 1938 vol 333 c208
49. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he contemplates a modification of the sugar drawback; and what is the estimated effect on the retail cost of sugar were the drawback to be abolished?

Sir J. Simon

As regards the first part of the question, the hon. Member will not expect me to anticipate my Budget statement. As regards the second part, the drawback is paid on exported sugar and it is therefore impossible to estimate the effect of its abolition on the retail price of sugar sold in this country.

Mr. Sorensen

Will the Chancellor agree that indirectly at least a considerable burden is resting on the consumer as a result of this drawback?

Sir J. Simon

I do not think it is possible to make that calculation.
