HC Deb 15 June 1938 vol 337 cc193-4
6. Mr. Hannah

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the breakdown of the treaties which concluded the War of 1914–18, he will consider calling a new world conference with a view to arriving at a fresh settlement?

Mr. Butler

I do not consider that such action would be likely to achieve the result desired by my hon. Friend.

Mr. Shinwell

Is there anything incompatible with the desire for peace, which has been expressed by His Majesty's Government, in calling a conference, even if only of a limited character? Cannot an attempt be made?

Mr. Butler

I have said that we do not think such an attempt would be likely to achieve the result which is desired.

Mr. Watkins

Can the hon. Gentleman say what is the alternative?

Mr. Hannah

Is it not time that we recognised the complete futility of the Treaty of Versailles?
