HC Deb 15 June 1938 vol 337 c213
42. Mr. Turton

asked the Minister of Transport what is the estimated total cost of the proposed Boroughbridge and Kirby Hill by-pass scheme; and what would have been the cost of the alternative scheme propounded by the Boroughbridge and District Traders' Committee at the public inquiry held on 6th April, 1938?

Mr. Burgin

The estimated total cost of constructing the proposed by-pass to Boroughbridge and Kirby Hill is £370,000. I have no definite information as to the estimated cost of the scheme propounded by the Traders' Committee to which my hon. Friend refers. I would point out, however, that this scheme would not provide a by-pass to Borough-bridge and would involve demolition of a large number of buildings in the main street. I cannot, therefore, regard it as a suitable alternative to the by-pass.

Mr. Turton

Is my right hon. Friend aware that those acquainted with this district regard the proposed by-pass scheme as unwarranted extravagance?

Mr. Burgin

I think as it is a trunk road, I must have some view in the matter.

Mr. Paling

Has it been definitely decided to proceed with this scheme?
