HC Deb 14 June 1938 vol 337 cc27-8
59. Major Carver

asked the Minister of Agriculture the present position with regard to the proposed amendments to the potato marketing scheme; whether any public inquiry is to be held; and whether any arrangements will be made for the representation of the consuming public at this inquiry?

Mr. Ramsbotham

On the submission of the proposed amendments of the potato marketing scheme, notice was given in accordance with the Agricultural Marketing Act, 1931, that objections and representations with regard to the amendments might be lodged on or before 7th May last. Twenty-nine objections and one representation were received within the prescribed time, and a notice regarding the arrangements for a public inquiry into the objections is being published in the Gazette later to-day. I am sending my hon. and gallant Friend a copy of this notice. With regard to the last part of the question, the person appointed to conduct a public inquiry under the Agricultural Marketing Act, 1931, has a discretionary authority to allow anyone whom he considers to be interested to appear at the inquiry.

Mr. Craven-Ellis

Have the purchases made a few weeks ago been sold at a profit or a loss?

Mr. Ramsbotham

I do not think that that arises out of the reply.
