HC Deb 14 June 1938 vol 337 c23
37. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Secretary for Mines the estimated output of light motor fuel produced by synthetic processes in Germany for the year 1937, and the amount produced in the United Kingdom for the same period?

Captain Crookshank

As I informed the hon. Member for Aberdare (Mr. G. Hall) in answer to a similar question on 23rd February, 1937, official figures of the production of liquid fuels in Germany are not available. With regard to the second part of the question, 117,000 tons of petrol were produced in this country in 1937 by the hydrogenation process.

Mr. Shinwell

Is the hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that I have received the figures of the estimated output of this fuel in Germany, and that Germany is now almost meeting its petrol requirements from home-produced oil; and is there any reason why we should lag behind in this respect?

Captain Crookshank

All that I have said was that there are no official figures available of what liquid fuel is produced in Germany.
