HC Deb 26 July 1938 vol 338 cc2909-10
75. Sir Percy Hurd

asked the right hon. and gallant Member for Rye, as representing the Forestry Commissioners, under what conditions affecting public access the Forestry Commission are taking over Savernake Forest?

Sir G. Courthope

In the event of the Forestry Commissioners acquiring Savernake Forest, sympathetic consideration will be given to questions of public access.

Sir P. Hurd

In the event of the Commissioners taking over the forest, will care be taken to preserve the character of the forest as a beech forest and as one of the features of the English scene?

Sir G. Courthope

Yes, Sir. In the event of the legal formalities being completed and our taking a lease of the forest, we have arranged to consult with the local committee of the Council for the Preservation of Rural England and to use every endeavour to regenerate the old forest by natural means, to get the natural regeneration of trees already there.
