HC Deb 20 July 1938 vol 338 c2195
65. Mr. Turton

asked the Minister of Transport when he proposes to undertake the widening and strengthening of the bridges over the River Ure and Milby Cut at Boroughbridge; what are the estimated costs, respectively, of these proposals and of the new bridges suggested as an alternative by the Boroughbridge and District Traders' Association; and whether he can indicate when the construction of the proposed by-pass is likely to be undertaken?

The Minister of Transport (Mr. Burgin)

Work on the two bridges is included in my programme for the current financial year and the North Riding of Yorkshire County Council have been asked to proceed with the preparation of detailed plans, drawings and estimates. The provisional estimated cost of improving the bridge over the River Ure is £45,000 and for that over Milby Cut £20,000, but the latter figure includes the cost of constructing a roundabout at the junction where the Great North Road and the Northallerton Road converge on the bridge. Assuming a width of 50 feet, the cost of the new bridges and the intervening viaduct proposed by the Traders' Association is estimated at about £120,000. The construction of the bypass is not likely to be undertaken for some years as there are other schemes on this and other trunk roads which are more urgently needed.
