HC Deb 20 July 1938 vol 338 cc2196-7
68. Mr. Tinker

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that many parts of the East Lancashire Road, Liverpool to Manchester, are not lighted; and whether the local authorities who control it have met to consider when this shall be done?

Mr. Burgin

I am aware that sections of this road are unlighted, but have no information that the local authorities have so far met to consider proposals for its lighting.

Mr. Tinker

If the road becomes dangerous due to bad lighting or to no lighting, has the Minister any power to insist that these authorities should do something to try to prevent accidents happening? In this case I hope that he will press the authorities to review this matter again.

Mr. Burgin

I am much obliged to the hon. Gentleman. I know his interest in this particular road, and I am myself most anxious that any safety precautions should be taken, but I am unaware that lighting is actually the difficulty. There are lighting authorities on the line of this road, and I sincerely hope that they will get together and make proposals, if that, in their judgment, is the way to deal with the matter.
