HC Deb 20 July 1938 vol 338 cc2174-5
3. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Prime Minister whether the continued existence of the International Danube Control Commission is in any way affected by the withdrawal of Germany from its membership; and whether any proposal has been received by His Majesty's Government from the German Government, similar to those made to other countries, that a purely Danubian Commission, excluding non-Danubian States, should be established?

Mr. Butler

The existence of the International Commission is not affected by the German Government's withdrawal, but it cannot now in practice effectually operate over the portions of the river within the present boundaries of the Reich. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.

Mr. Henderson

Would His Majesty's Government expect to be consulted before this International Commission was dissolved?

Mr. Butler

His Majesty's Government intend to collaborate in the work of this International Commission on which they are represented, and I know of no reason to suppose that it will be dissolved.
