HC Deb 28 February 1938 vol 332 cc729-30
10. Mr. Thorne

asked the Prime Minister whether he can give any information about the extent to which looting of British goods has occurred in Shanghai and the value of British property removed from British warehouses?

The Prime Minister

The total number of claims notified up to 30th December in respect of looting and wanton damage to property was 102. Nine of these claims have been prepared and transmitted by His Majesty's Consul-General to the Japanese Consulate-General. It will be appreciated that most of the claimants have not yet been able to formulate their claims and have only communicated preliminary statements to His Majesty's Consulate-General, where assistance is being given in drawing them up. In view of the difficulty experienced by the claimants in ascertaining the value of property looted or spoiled, detailed figures of a large proportion of the losses are not yet available at His Majesty's Consulate-General.
