HC Deb 03 February 1938 vol 331 cc357-8
23. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will consider appointing a Departmental Committee to inquire into the amount of compensation paid under the Workmen's Compensation and Employers' Liability Acts to persons injured or awarded to the dependants of those killed; and, if considered necessary, will he introduce legislation to amend the present Acts?

The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Sir Samuel Hoare)

This is certainly a matter which will have to be further explored before any amendment of the existing provisions could be undertaken, but as at present advised I do not contemplate the appointment of a Departmental Committee for the purpose.

Mr. Day

In view of the fact that many of these awards are totally inadequate, can the right hon. Gentleman say how the matter can be further explored?

Sir S. Hoare

Through my Department and the various interests concerned.
