HC Deb 03 February 1938 vol 331 c382
67. Mr. Keeling

asked the Minister of Health whether he has now drawn the attention of London borough councils shipping refuse down the Thames to the advantages of using barges provided with wooden hatch-covers to prevent the refuse from being exposed to view or blown into the water; and what replies he has received?

Sir K. Wood

Yes, Sir. I have received replies from 10 councils, of whom one already uses barges with wooden hatch-covers; two will stipulate for solid covers in new contracts; two will consider the question; and five consider their existing practice to be effective.
