HC Deb 03 February 1938 vol 331 c377
60. Mr. Day

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he will consider setting up a Departmental Committee to report on the means of encouraging the study of foreign languages mostly used in commerce, with the object of reducing the number of emigrants to this country who take up positions that would otherwise be held by British subjects if they had a more com prehensive knowledge of foreign Ian-gauges?

Mr. Lindsay

I would remind the hon. Member that in 1930 the Committee on Education for Salesmanship presented an interim report dealing with modern foreign languages. The Board are constantly engaged in considering means of improving the teaching of such languages, and my Noble Friend does not consider a formal inquiry by a Departmental Committee to be necessary.

Mr. Day

Does the hon. Member consider that the facilities provided are adequate to meet the requirements?

Mr. Lindsay

I do.
