HC Deb 15 December 1938 vol 342 cc2151-2
25. Mr. Buchanan

asked the Minister of Labour whether he intends to carry into legislation the proposals made by the statutory committee presided over by Sir W. Beveridge; and whether it is his intention to introduce his proposals before the Christmas Recess?

Mr. E. Brown

I assume that the hon. Member has in mind the report of the Unemployment Insurance Statutory Committee as to Holidays and Suspensions in relation to Unemployment Insurance, which was made in October. This report is under actual consideration, but I do not anticipate that it will be possible to introduce legislation in connection with it before Christmas.

Mr. Buchanan

In view of the fact that the proposals are fairly wide-reaching in their effects, would it not be better if hon. Members during the Recess had the Bill before them for consideration, seeing that a large number of trade unions are affected by the proposed legislation?

Mr. Brown

There will be plenty of time for consideration before the discussion of the Bill.
