HC Deb 15 December 1938 vol 342 c2151
23. Mr. W. Joseph Stewart

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that in the South Hylton district of Durham there is a large percentage of unemployment; that most of the industries in the area are closed; and what steps are being taken by him or by the Commissioner for the Special Areas to help to provide work for the people affected?

Mr. E. Brown

I am aware of the position in this area. I would draw the hon. Member's attention to the acquisition by the Commissioner for Special Areas of the site at Pallion for the provision of factories for new industrial undertakings.

Mr. Stewart

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this district which was once prosperous, is now practically derelict owing to the closing down of nearly the whole of the industries there? Is he aware that the site at Pallion will not help us? Can he not say definitely today whether he is prepared to do anything? In the event of his doing nothing, can he persuade the Commissioner for the Special Areas to do something to help these people?

Mr. Brown

I cannot add anything to the answer I have given to the hon. Member.
