HC Deb 14 December 1938 vol 342 cc1971-2
13. Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

asked the Prime Minister whether he can now make a statement concerning a protest made by His Majesty's Consul-General at Frankfurt-on-Main against German posters maligning the British troops in Palestine?

Mr. Butler

Yes, Sir. A report received from His Majesty's Consul-General makes it clear that accounts which appeared in the Press were based on a misunderstanding. Mr. Smallbones made no official protest but, in expressing to the military commandant of Frankfurt his regret that his engagements prevented him from accepting an invitation addressed to him, he drew the latter's attention to these posters and said that he thought their exhibition regrettable.

Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

Has an expression of approval been conveyed to Mr. Smallbones for his very proper conduct in this matter?

Mr. Butler

Mr. Smallbones is one of our most respected officials, and I am sure he will realise that his action had the approval of His Majesty's Government.

Mr. Mander

Have the posters been withdrawn?
