73. Viscountess Astorasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he intends to maintain the restriction on the admission of women to the administrative staff of the Dominions Office and the Colonial Office?
Mr. M. MacDonaldNo, Sir. I have decided to remove the restriction which has hitherto been in force. But I think 1994 it is desirable that, in the first instance, the admission of women to the administrative staff of the Dominions Office and Colonial Office—which might necessitate service overseas—should be regarded as experimental, in order that the matter may be reviewed, after a few years, in the light of experience gained during that time.
Viscountess AstorWhile thanking my right hon. Friend for what he has said, will he bear in mind that women do the work as well as men?
§ Lieut.-Commander AgnewDoes my right hon. Friend envisage the immediate appointment of any governesses?
§ Mr. H. G. WilliamsIn examining this matter, will my right hon. Friend call for a report from Virginia as to the success of black magistrates in the United States?
