§ 27. Mr. Sorensenasked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that two British subjects representing Indian newspapers of repute were recently deported from Paris by order of the French Government; that before this they were subjected to interrogation, their photographs and their fingerprints taken; that their request to see the British consul and their protests were ignored; that no charge was made against them and no reason or explanation given for their treatment; that their notice of expulsion from France prevents their entering that country again; and whether he will take up the matter with the French Government with a request for an explanation, and the withdrawal of the notice of expulsion?
§ Mr. ButlerI understand that two Indian journalists were expelled from France on 2nd December. Instructions are being sent to His Majesty's Ambassador in Paris to request the French Government to inform him of the facts of the case.
§ Mr. SorensenCan the hon. Gentleman say when it is likely that a reply will be received?
§ Mr. ButlerI hope as soon as possible, in view of the importance of the matter.
