60. Mr. David Adamsasked the Prime Minister the reasons for the closing of the British consulate at Leningrad on the 10th ultimo; and whether this consulate has been transferred elsewhere in Russia?
§ The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Butler)As regards the first part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for South-West Norfolk (Mr. Christie) on 21st February. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.
Mr. AdamsIs the Minister aware that a large number of shipowners in the North of England whose business is done largely with Russia regret the closing of this consulate, and are steps being taken to reopen it?
§ Mr. ButlerThe views of the Soviet Government make it difficult to re-open the consulate.
