64. Mr. Paling

67. Sir P. Hannon

asked the Prime Minister whether he can make a statement on the result of the negotiations which have been in process between His Majesty's Government and the Government of Italy?

The Prime Minister

The recent negotiations in Rome were brought to a successful conclusion on 16th April when the signatures of Lord Perth, on behalf of His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, and of Count Ciano, on behalf of Italy, were appended to a comprehensive Anglo-Italian Agreement. On the same day an agreement providing for neighbourly relations in East Africa was concluded between the United Kingdom, Egypt and Italy, the Egyptian Minister in Rome signing on behalf of his country. Exchanges of notes also took place between the Egyptian Minister on the one hand and Lord Perth and Count Ciano on the other, under which Egypt was associated with two declarations which form part of the main Anglo-Italian Agreement. These agreements have now been laid before Parliament in a White Paper, and an early opportunity will be afforded to the House to discuss their terms.
