HC Deb 12 April 1938 vol 334 cc935-6
71. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Minister of Health whether he will take some steps to protect the cigarette-smoking public from the cigarettes now being sold containing injurious foreign matter blended with a small percentage of tobacco, in view of the danger to public health entailed?

Mr. Bernays

I have no information about the sale of cigarettes of the kind mentioned by my hon. Friend, but I shall be glad to make inquiries if he will send me any information in his possession.

Mr. De la Bère

Does my hon. Friend realise that this particular brand of cigarettes is a direct negation of the Keep Fit and Get Fit Campaign which he is trying to get into the public mind?

Mr. Bernays

Perhaps my hon. Friend will be kind enough to give me one of those cigarettes, and I shall be able to test it.

Mr. De la Bère

Does my hon. Friend realise that I am up against all the vested interests in this matter in this country?
