HC Deb 11 April 1938 vol 334 cc749-50
36. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has given consideration to the correspondence and cablegram from New Zealand sent to him by the hon. Member for Stoke; and will he take steps to see that pottery imported into this country and New Zealand is marked with an indication of the country of origin?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade (Captain Euan Wallace)

I have considered the correspondence to which the hon. Member refers. With regard to this country, imported pottery is already required to bear an indication of origin at the time of importation and on sale or exposure for sale. The question whether New Zealand should require all imported pottery to be marked with an indication of the country of origin is a matter for His Majesty's Government in New Zealand.

Mr. Smith

Will the right hon. and gallant Member bear in mind that one country is avoiding this provision?

Captain Wallace

I am afraid that does not alter the fact that this is a matter for His Majesty's Government in New Zealand.
