HC Deb 28 October 1937 vol 328 c246
55. Mr. T. Williams

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the Kidsgrove scheme for providing cheap milk for children under five years of age is likely to break down owing to shortage of funds; and, if so, what steps are being taken by his Department to assure the continuance of the scheme?

Sir K. Wood

I am aware of the difficulties which the Kidsgrove and District Social Services Club have experienced in obtaining funds to continue the provision of cheap milk for children under five years of age. I am in communication with the Staffordshire County Council on the general question of the supply by the council of milk to expectant and nursing mothers and young children, and I am informed that the county council have the subject under consideration.

Mr. Williams

What are the Government prepared to do if there is a danger of this scheme breaking down altogether?

Sir K. Wood

I think we had better await the action of the Staffordshire County Council.

Mr. Williams

Will the right hon. Gentleman say whether the Government are willing to help financially to carry on such a desirable scheme?

Sir K. Wood

No, Sir, that is the duty of the county council.
