§ The Minister of Transport (Mr. Burgin)Works to the value of £5,800,000, which had been approved prior to the transfer of 13 trunk roads, are being carried to completion by the authorities concerned. Since ist April, 1937, local authorities have accepted invitations to carry out as my agents 62 schemes, estimated to cost £889,000. The authorities will be invited to proceed similarly with 37 schemes estimated to cost approximately £½ millions. There is a number of other schemes still in early stages of investigation. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.
67. Mr. Jenkinsasked the Minister of Transport the total cost of trunk road improvement schemes authorised in South Wales and Monmouthshire during the present financial year?
§ Mr. BurginWork to the value of £266,000 on trunk roads in South Wales and Monmouthshire has been approved prior to the transfer of those roads and is being carried to completion by the authorities concerned. Since 1st April, 1937, local authorities in the same areas have agreed to carry out as my agents eight schemes, estimated to cost £16,000. Further schemes to the value of £80,000 are in various stages of preparation and, as the hon. Member may be aware, I intend shortly to hold a local inquiry into a proposal to undertake a large scheme of road construction to provide a by-pass of the trunk road through Neath.
