HC Deb 21 October 1937 vol 327 cc34-5
85. Mr. V. Adams

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether His Majesty's Government have now ascertained the calibre and range of the Spanish guns emplaced opposite Gibraltar; whether they know their country of origin and place of manufacture; and whether they will now give this information to the House?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

I have been asked to reply. I have made further inquiries, which have confirmed the statement made on behalf of the Government on this subject in the course of Debate on 27th July last.

Mr. Adams

Will my right hon. Friend answer the first part of the question? Do the Government in fact know the calibre and the range of these guns?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Adams

Do they know the country of origin?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Adams

Will they tell the House?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

I think it will be within the recollection of my hon. Friend that my right hon. Friend the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence made a very full statement on this subject.

Mr. Wedgwood Benn

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that no statement has been made as to the country of origin?

Sir Archibald Sinclair

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the statement made did not cover the points put to him in this question, and, therefore, will he give an answer to those points?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

I think it did cover the points in a mariner which met with the full approval of the House.

Mr. Benn

Will the right hon. Gentleman state now the country of origin?

Sir Percy Harris

Does the right hon. Gentleman know the country of origin?
