HC Deb 21 October 1937 vol 327 cc6-7
6. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Labour the number of applications that have been made to his Department for permits and the number granted for foreign domestic servants or foreign musicians, respectively, for the 12 months ended to the last convenient date?

Mr. E. Brown

During the 12 months ended 30th September, 1937, 13,586 applications were made to the Ministry for permits in respect of the employment of foreigners from abroad as domestic servants, and of these, 11,776 were granted. During the same period, 680 applications were made for foreign musicians, of which 643 were granted; the great majority of these applications related to concert artists and instrumentalists required for specific engagements in this country.

Mr. Day

Is there any real knowledge that the permit is granted for a certain period of time?

Mr. Brown

Oh, yes, Sir, and, of course, each case is judged upon its merits.

Mr. T. Williams

Has the right hon. Gentleman any knowledge of the terms of service of these foreign domestic servants?

Mr. Brown

A most careful inquiry is made before the permit is granted.

Mr. Williams

Will the right hon. Gentleman give the House the benefit of the knowledge he has obtained?

Mr. Brown

On the appropriate occasion.
