HC Deb 21 October 1937 vol 327 c6
5. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Labour the approximate number of insured persons between the ages of 16 and 64 who were in employment in Great Britain as at the last convenient date?

Mr. E. Brown

It is provisionally estimated that at 13th September, 1937, the number of insured persons, aged 16–64, in employment in Great Britain (exclusive of persons within the agricultural scheme) was approximately 11,599,000.

Mr. Day

Does that figure include those persons on temporary holiday during that period?

Mr. Brown

No, Sir; it is an estimate obtained, first of all, from the Exchange books, in July, 1936, and it is an estimate probably made month by month from the monthly accounts.
