HC Deb 22 November 1937 vol 329 c852
58. Mr. Eckersley

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether he has considered a letter from the chairman of the Manchester Royal Infirmary with reference to the proposed new Ministry of Labour buildings in Manchester; and, in view of the very strong feeling in that city, will he take steps to ensure that the amenities of the infirmary are in no way affected by the proposed building?

The First Commissioner of Works (Sir Philip Sassoon)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given on my behalf to a similar question on 17th November by the hon. Member for Leigh (Mr. Tinker).

Mr. Eckersley

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that sympathetic as well as efficient treatment is given to this matter?

Sir P. Sassoon

Yes, Sir, I am just as anxious as the hon. Member is to have some amicable solution of this difficulty.

Mr. Benn

Do we understand that no definite steps are being taken until the right hon. Gentleman has investigated the matter himself?

Sir P. Sassoon

I am awaiting a reply from the board of management.

Mr. Ellis Smith

Will the right hon. Gentleman also take into consideration the alternative suggestion of offering compensation with a view to providing alternative accommodation?
