HC Deb 22 November 1937 vol 329 c828
6. Vice-Admiral Taylor

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he can supply a statement showing the election expenses of all candidates in the recent general elections in India?

Lord Stanley

I regret that I am not in possession of the information asked for by my hon. and gallant Friend, which relates to a matter under provincial control.

Vice-Admiral Taylor

Is it not possible to obtain information on this matter? It is rather necessary to know whether high electoral expenses were incurred during the election?

Mr. Lansbury

On a point of Order. Are we allowed to put down questions concerning matters outside the jurisdiction of this House?

Mr. Speaker

It is quite true that such questions are not allowed, but it is very difficult to draw the line as to whether certain questions are outside the jurisdiction of this House.

Mr. Wedgwood Benn

Why is it that in the return recently made, they did not even give the names of candidates who were successful in the election?

Lord Stanley

I will look into that point and see if I can get any information.

Sir A. Knox

Is it not true that one of these democrats spent over £10,000 on his election?
