§ 45. Mr. Bateyasked the Prime Minister whether he will take the necessary steps to secure that when the Speaker and Members of this House have to go to meet the Members of the House of Lords both Houses should meet in Westminster Hall, with seating accommodation provided for all the Members?
§ Sir J. SimonI presume that the hon. Member is referring to the ceremony in connection with the State Opening of Parliament. The procedure followed on this occasion does not depend upon this House alone, and, in any case, I do not think that the House would desire to disturb the traditional form of such an ancient ceremony.
§ Mr. BateyCan the Chancellor say why the practice should continue of Members of this House being compelled to stand in the presence of Members of the other House?
§ Sir J. SimonThe reason seems to me to be that they have no room to sit down.
