HC Deb 01 November 1937 vol 328 c550
76. Mr. H. G. Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he contemplates any modification of the policy of restricting the London money market in respect of issues overseas for foreign countries?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply which my right hon. Friend gave on 17th June last to my hon. Friend the Member for Lincoln (Mr. Liddall).

Mr. De la Bère

Would it not be possible for the London money market to consider lending money to agriculture at 2 per cent., instead of lending to the foreigners?

Mr. Alexander

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware of the net decrease that is going on year after year in our investments overseas, which is largely affecting the balance of payments?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

I note the right hon. Gentleman's views, but if he refers to the answer on 17th June last he will see that my right hon. Friend does not contemplate a change of policy.
