1. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can make a further statement concerning the position of affairs in China; and what steps have been taken in connection with the various negotiations in relation to extra-territoriality?

The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Viscount Cranborne)

have no general statement to make in regard to the position in China. No such negotiations as those referred to in the second part of the question are in progress.

Mr. Day

Can the Noble Lord say whether many of the Provinces are under military government there?

Viscount Cranborne

I should like notice of that question.

2. Mr. Mander

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in any negotiations with Japan and other countries with regard to the Far East, he will give an assurance that no alteration will be made in treaties with and affecting China without the willing consent of that country?

Viscount Cranborne

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Mander

At what stage is it proposed to bring the Chinese Government into the negotiations?
