HC Deb 23 March 1937 vol 321 c2757
18. Lieut.-Commander Fletcher (for Mr. Walkden)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the large profits realised by the Suez Canal Company beyond the amounts needed to meet statutory interest and sinking fund requirements, the Government, as partners in the company, are taking steps towards securing reductions in the present heavy charges levied by the company upon mercantile shipping?

Mr. Runciman

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to questions on this subject by the hon. Member for Hitchin (Sir A. Wilson) on 7th December last, from which he will see that substantial reductions will be made in the Suez Canal dues on 1st April, 1937.
