HC Deb 23 March 1937 vol 321 cc2756-7
54. Mr. Mander

asked the Minister of Labour the present standard rates of wages recognised by agreement with trades unions for the drop forgings industry in Willenhall and South Staffordshire generally?

Mr. E. Brown

The only standard rates embodied in collective agreements between employers' and workpeople's organisations for drop forgers and stampers, of which I am aware are 62s. per week for tool setters and 59s. to 63s. for stampers in the engineering and allied industries in the Birmingham, Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire area. It is understood that these rates apply to stampings up to 30 cwt. and that higher rates are paid for stampings of greater weights. Moreover, a large proportion of the work-people are paid on piece rates which vary according to the class of work and other conditions, and the hon. Member may wish to obtain detailed information from the local Engineering Employers' Association.

Mr. Mander

I take it that these rates will apply to all firms holding Government contracts?
