HC Deb 15 March 1937 vol 321 c1628
50. Mr. Kirby

asked the Minister of Pensions whether he will sympathetically consider the desirability of granting in Coronation week a special Coronation allowance to Service pensioners, and the widows and orphans of deceased Service pensioners, in recognition of their service, suffering and sacrifices on behalf of the Crown and country as a whole?

Commander Southby (Lord of the Treasury)

I have been asked to reply. I am informed that there is no power under the terms of the Pensions Warrants or Statutes to authorise the special allowance suggested.

Mr. Kirby

Will the hon. and gallant Member be good enough to put that question to the Treasury?

Commander Southby

Perhaps the hon. Member will look at the question which was answered by the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 19th January, in which he said the Government could not see their way to promote the necessary legislation to authorise additional grants.

87. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in what manner it is proposed to utilise the services of officers and men in the police reserve for the Coronation procession?

The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Sir John Simon)

The Commissioner of Police informs me that he does not propose to utilise, on the occasion of the Coronation, the services of retired police officers, who have joined his reserve, for duty in an emergency.
