HC Deb 08 March 1937 vol 321 cc799-800
63. Commander Locker-Lampson

asked the Home Secretary whether Mr. Clarence Hatry's 16-year term of imprisonment dates from the day of arrest or the day of conviction; and how many convicts are serving terms of 16 years at this moment?

Mr. Lloyd

The sentence in this case was 14 years penal servitude, and it dates from the opening day of the Assize at which the sentence was passed. One convict is at present serving sentences totalling 16 years penal servitude.

Commander Locker - Lampson

In retrospect, does not the sentence seem very vindictive?
